Strong local businesses have a vital role to play

KMS Facilities was founded as a small firm offering maintenance and repair work for the social housing sector.

Within a year of launching, the business had achieved a turnover of £1 million and employed 20 people.

Fast forward eight years and KMS Facilities Group has grown to a £20 million-a-year group with six companies to its name.

This growth, which continued year-on-year in spite of the recession, saw the company last year crowned the winner of the Mail News ernal recognition but this is external recognition, which is important."

Now businesses across Hull and the East Riding are invited to increase their profile by entering the Mail's Business Awards 2012.

This year, the Business of The Year Award has been divided into three separate awards - one each for small, medium and large businesses.

This is to reflect the different challenges faced by varying sized businesses but also to be certain we give organisations of any size the opportunity to shine while competing on a level playing field.

The Mail's Business of the Year Award (Medium) is open to businesses with between 25 and 149 employees.

Sponsored by the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), the award judges will be looking at all elements of company performance, paying particular attention to managerial and financial performance, evidence of success against targets set, long term plans and company strategy and product or service development.

Staff training and development will also be taken into consideration.

Neil Waterhouse, RBS relationship director, explained why RBS was this year backing the Business of the Year Award (Medium).

He said: "Our support for these awards is just one way RBS reinforces its commitment to businesses in the Humber and East Yorkshire.

"We are particularly pleased to be sponsoring the medium-sized Business of the Year Award, as this award recognises the necessity of the role that strong local businesses have in our region."

Businesses that are shortlisted in the awards will be invited to the awards gala dinner on Thursday, November 15, at the Willerby Manor.

Each shortlistee will be profiled in the Mail before the event, giving the successful companies a chance to share their success with tens of thousands of Mail readers - readers who could become your clients and customers.
