Apprenticeship offers 'a flexible approach'
MARINE TRAK, based at Mylor Yacht Harbour, installs, repairs and maintains marine engines and electrical equipment. Will Parkinson, advanced marine engineering apprentice, said: "I came to Marine Trak for work experience while I was doing my light marine engineering level 2 course at Falmouth. "I also get to support the new apprentices and work on projects with the full-time students at college, which is an added bonus. "It has worked out really well. "Nick really stood out to us. "Ian Yates has now been with us for eight years and Will Parkinson completed his apprenticeship in 2009. "At the end of the placement they offered me the chance to remain with them and gain my level 3 advanced apprenticeship in marine engineering, which meant I still attend college one day a week. Engineering manager Nathan Percival said: "My father did a four-year apprenticeship in engineering before setting up Marine Trak. "We have a new apprentice starting with us in September - Nick Smith, 16, from Roseland Community College. "Both were past level 2 marine engineering students from Falmouth and the level of know how and skill that they came to us with from college was exceptional. "Marine Trak is a great company to work for, not only does it do marine engineering but fit-out and shipwrights, so every day is different. "Eight years ago Mylor Yacht Harbour bought the business and kept me on as manager and since then we have taken on four apprentices with Falmouth Marine School, two of which are still with us. "The new engineering workshop is superb and is as near to the real working environment as it can be. Nick, who is about to begin an apprenticeship with Marine Trak in September, said: "I've really enjoyed my young apprenticeship course and to be able to stay with the company and do my advanced apprenticeship is fantastic. "He came to us with several other pupils on the young apprenticeship scheme, set up by Cornwall Marine Network (CMN). "The marine school apprenticeship programme is ideal for us. "I am also really looking forward to going to the marine school one day a week. |
